2017 Connolly Cup Award Winner:
An unusual set of circumstances saw Matt Myers’ return to West Seneca West this season. Matt is the only player to be a Connolly Cup finalist while representing two different schools (Bishop Timon-2016). Matt has tremendous qualities on the field that make him such a great quarterback. His unselfishness and leadership make him a great teammate. Size and strength are a given. His mechanics, arm strength and release are exceptional. He also possesses great athleticism and running ability. His ability to throw while on the move is truly special.
While leading the Indians to their first state championship Matt became just the third quarterback in Western New York to pass for 2,000+ yards and run for 1,000+ yards in the same season (Chad Kelly, St. Joe’s-2010 and Tyree Brown, South Park-2015). Matt completed 153 of his 264 pass attempts for 2,407 yards and 24 touchdowns. Matt only threw two interceptions on the year. He ran the ball 137 times for 1,040 yards and scored another 22 TDs. He accounted for 265 yards of offense and nearly four touchdowns per game.
About Our Award
Started in 1972 by the Riverside Athletic Club, the goal of our award is to recognize outstanding varsity football players from over 80 schools in Western New York State.
During the season our group scouts student athletes looking for outstanding performances on a weekly basis. The players are judged on a number of factors including, strength of opposition, sportsmanship, athletic ability, team play, and work ethic. Following the final game of the season, discussion and game tape is used to narrow our list of outstanding performers to the top ten.
The ten finalists are broken down using a secret ballot and grading system to determine the one final winner. The finalists are honored at a press conference and luncheon.
